Classical Chinese buildings are known for their richness of painted decoration, imparting a perfect blend of the aesthetics of architecture and the aesthetics of color.
For thousands of years,
traditional Chinese architecture has been passed down and developed,
highlighting its unique structures as well as itsvivid decorative painting.
Buildings in different regions display varied painting characteristics.
Someare ornate with bold and bright colors;
while others are painted in soft pastels.
Apart from various pigments,
different materials such as paper and pottery are also used.
Architectural decorative painting is both functional and ornamental,
illustrating China’s 5000 years of history and culture.
In the Qing dynasty,
Hexi painting,
featuring the Chinese dragon and pheonix,
was applied to the principal halls of the imperial palaces and temples;
Xuanzi painting,
characterized by spiral flowers,
decorated government buildings and common temples;
whereas Suzhou Style painting with diverse patterns,
was used in officials’ houses and gardens.
The ornate doors, windows, cornices and beams present such a picturesque effect.
The colored painting decorated on traditional Chinese buildings incorporates all the best-known technical skills such as carving, coloring and embossing,
representing a perfect combination of Chinese art and architecture.
