JK Rowling has revealed that monsters in her sixth book, The Half-Blood Prince, were the animated dead of “vagrant, homeless muggles” who were killed by Voldemort when the dark wizard and villain of the book was rising to power.

Rowling explains that an Inferus is a “corpse that has been reanimated by a curse” to bee “a grisly puppet” that can be used as a servant by a dark wizard. Used by Voldemort in the sixth book to protect a Horcrux, the Inferi have “many uses” as “a warrior or guardian with no regard for its own safety”.
